God’s presence overshadowed the Ark of the Covenant. For much of the Old Testament, the Ark wasn’t the only place where a person could encounter God, but it was the main place, the privileged place. That all changed, however, around 587 B.C. … the prophet Jeremiah took the ark from its place in the Holy of Holies, hiding it in a cave on Mount Nebo … he declared, “The place shall be unknown until God gathers his people together again and shows his mercy.” (2 Macc 2:7)
